Missing Batten OH emerges as oldest member of Nepalese House of Representatives

Above: Pashupati Shumsher Rana – still going strong in Nepalese politics aged 81

We were interested to hear recently from John Yearley (Tr 56) about Pashupati Shumsher Rana (B 56) who until recently had been listed on our Missing Members list.

The Haileybury Society exists to build and maintain a lifetime’s network for all its members, helping to put friends back in contact with each other so it was a pleasure to hear about Pashaputi from John who runs his own charity, the Yearley Trust, in Nepal.

Pashaputi is a politician from Nepal’s Rana dynasty and who has served in a variety of governmental roles in the kingdom including its Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Finance, Water Resources and Communication in the 1990s and before that as Minister of Panchayat and Local Development (1986–1988), Ministry of Transport and Tourism (1978–1979).

Now aged 81, he is still active in politics as a lawmaker from the Rastriya Prajatantra Party; last December he took the oath of office and secrecy from the President, Bidya Devi Bhandari who administered the oath to him as the senior member of the House of Representatives (above). He secured the role of lawmaker via Nepal’s proportional ballot.

As the oldest member of the House, he has also been chairing the lower house meetings until the Speaker is elected which normally occurs within 15 days of its first meeting.

It is typical of Haileybury’s ethos of Spirit of Service that it still burns brightly in the shadows of the Himalayas and that two OHs from the same year are still active after so many years doing such valuable work for the communities they serve.

Missing Members – getting back in touch

We are always interested in hearing from Members of the Haileybury Society who have lost touch with us – and we hear from many each year who are delighted to join our network to be reconnected with old friends.

You too can help us build our network – take a look at our Missing Members list and, should there be a name on it which you recognise, please do encourage them to get back in touch with us. More here.

Please donate to The Haileybury Society

As a charity, The Haileybury Society relies on its income from membership fees, legacies and donations of all sizes to achieve our charitable aims, and to help fellow OHs of all ages. It is only through your help that we are able to do this; any donation, no matter its size, is always appreciated. Donate here
