Education and development
As part of its charitable objectives, The Haileybury Society offers travel grants to Haileyburians currently in the VI Form and to young Haileyburians up to age 25.
These grants are delivered with the purpose of helping pupils and former pupils either to enhance elements of their study (e.g. for A level stuides) or to enhance their educational or cultural development.
Beneficiaries of travel grants are expected to submit a report revealing how their receipt of a travel grant assisted them in their development. Some recent examples of young Haileyburians assisted by The Haileybury Society are listed below.

Travel Grant case studies
University preparation
In 2022, The Haileybury Society was pleased to support Emily Jacobs (M 13) with a travel grant to help her volunteer Ecuador in preparation for her degree in Medical Sciences at Edinburgh University.
As well as shadowing Ecuadorian scientists in Quito, Emily was also to bring her passion for music to good use by teaching in a local school, which also had the tangential benefit of helping her improve her Spanish.
Healthcare abroad
In 2021, Richard Dimock (B 97), former Head of School (2001-02), was awarded a special Haileybury Society travel grant of £1000 towards a project during which he worked at the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Blantyre, Malawi.
As Richard says, “Receiving this grant enabled me to contribute to the delivery of healthcare here, where the huge burden of trauma is managed in a challenging and resource-limited setting. I also had a role in providing medical education to local students and surgical trainees.”
A-level research
In 2019, The Haileybury Society supported Ellie Owen (LS & H 13) by helping to fund a trip to Berlin in which she was able to contextualise her history studies concerning Germany in the 20th Century.
As Ellie says, “my visit to Berlin was brilliant and I wish to thank the Haileybury Society and the Wilfrid Blunt trust for this amazing opportunity. It added an extra dimension to my studies and was an experience I will treasure for a long time.”
Cultural exposure
In 2019, The Haileybury Society assisted Luca Ten Doornkaat (BF 17) who travelled to Bali with the help of a Society travel grant and a grant from the Wilfred Blunt Trust. While there, he also worked with young children.
As Luca says, “From a personal point of view, it was hugely enriching experience prior to beginning my degree in international economics and management at Bocconi university in Milan, Italy. Thank you.”
Educational enrichment
In 2019, Edward Davies (K 14), Edward Taylor (LS & B 11) and George Amos (LS & Th 12) visited Germany, Poland, Austria and the Czech Republic assisted by grants from both the Wilfrid Blunt Trust and the Haileybury Society.
As the boys said, “The recurring themes of war time wreckage and postwar reconstruction never left us. At Auschwitz, the quote by George Santayana, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it”, remind us to respect history and learn from our mistakes – a fitting mantra to summarise our time in Europe.“

As a charity, The Haileybury Society relies on its income from membership fees, legacies and donations of all sizes to achieve our charitable aims of assisting our membership irrespective of age, and supporting the OH community, OH clubs, and the school.
