In September 2020, David and Margaret Sargent walked 100 miles of the the South Downs Way in memory of their daughter Anna Sargent (A & L 92) who tragically took her own life in 2012. They managed to raise a magnificent £10,000 for Mind, the Mental Health charity.
Remembering a cherished daughter
As Margaret tells us, “10 year ago, our daughter, Anna, took her own life after struggling with mental illness for nearly two decades. Horse riding was her passion and one of the things she most enjoyed was riding the South Downs Way. 10 years on, we plan to walk the 100 miles of the South Downs Way when, between us we are aged 150 years.
The challenge ahead
Walking is acknowledged to be one of the best things we can do for our mental wellbeing. Three years ago, David was on a life support machine for 3 days with a breathing problem and our practice walks are reminding us that the walk is more of a challenge than we thought!
For 10 years we have supported Mind, the national mental health charity (who are celebrating their 75th anniversary) helping to raise awareness of mental illness and challenge stigma.
We have seen a great improvement in that 10 years but we want to help Mind continue with their vital work by raising £10,000.
Anna was a beautiful and clever girl who was much loved but was robbed of her life by her mind. We think of her every day and miss her more than we can say.”
You can still donate
If you would like to support David and Margaret in their moving and important campaign, please donate all you can still do so on their Just Giving page here. Mental health is a signficant issue in today’s increasingly stressful world and Mind is the UK’s leading charity in providing strategies for people to cope.
