Charity Work – Charles Bagot-Jewitt (Tr 78) raises money for Staffordshire

10 Aug, 2020

Charles Bagot-Jewitt (Tr 78), who was named High Sheriff of Staffordshire in April 2020, has been cycling round the county of Staffordshire raising money for county’s Community Foundation.

Charlie and a group of cyclists toured the county between the 1st and the 9th  August 2020 in aid of the Community Foundation for Staffordshire, a charity whose mission is to strengthen communities across the county.

This brief films tells a little nore about the ride and its purpose.

The route covered over three-hundred miles of our county with various stop off points to highlight the county’s potential as another fantastic “staycation” in the UK – a county many claim to be home to the legendary Green Knight at the mysterious Lud’s Church near Flash.

About the role of High Sheriff

Charlie was appointed High Sheriff in April 2020, a position which is held for twelve months. The role of High Sheriff is an ancient one which, in the middle ages, was focused on maintaining the peace for the king in a given shire or county. These days the role is largely ceremonial, with five key aims, which can be described as follows:

  • To lend active support to the principal organs of the Constitution within their county – the Royal Family, the Judiciary, the Police and other law-enforcement agencies, the emergency services, local authorities, and all recognised church and faith groups.
  • To ensure the welfare of visiting High Court Judges; to attend on them at Court and to offer them hospitality.
  • To support the Lord-Lieutenant on royal visits and on other occasions as appropriate.
  • To take an active part in supporting and promoting voluntary organisations with the County.
  • To uphold and enhance the ancient Office of High Sheriff and to make a meaningful contribution to the High Sheriff’s County during the year of Office.
