The Haileybury Society is saddened to learn belatedly of the death of Anthony – Tony – Tarry (M & BF 39) who died on July 24th 2018 at the age of 92. He was interred on 30th July 2018.
Owner of the Islanmore Stud in Croom, County Limerick which he bought in 1962, Tony was a highly respected and popular veterinary surgeon and a former joint-master of the Limerick Hunt.
In 1983, he became a member of the Turf Club, becoming a member of the Irish National Hunt Steeplechase Committee three years later. He had also served as chairman of the Turf Club’s Licensing Committee and was acting steward at many race meetings.
Multiple wins
He was a multiple Group 1 winner with Snow Fairy, foaled at Islanmore Stud, which completed the Epsom-Curragh Oaks double in 2010 and also numbered the Irish Champion Stakes among her six top-level wins.
Love of Ireland
Tony moved to Ireland from the UK in 1951 after visiting on holiday and is described as falling in love with the country so much that he never went back. He is survived by his wife, Mary, sons Charles and Jack and daughter Caroline. He is variously described as being wonderful, kind, supportive and warm; he was clearly a much-liked man.
The Society extends its belated sympathy and sincere condolences to Anthony’s family and friends at their loss.
