The Haileybury Society is saddened to learn of the death of James – Jim – Edmund Everitt, OBE (B 50) who has died aged 85 on 1st February 2022 in St Barnabus’ Hospice after a long illness.
Passion for golf
John Everitt (B 79) has sent us the following tribute from the Old Haileyburian Golfing Society (OHGS):
Jim was a stalwart of the OHGS being Captain in 1982 and President from 2003 to 2007. He played in 150 representative scratch matches and, in the Grafton Morrish, had a phenomenal record, winning 73% of his matches over a period of nineteen years including, in 1977, winning all his games playing top with Ted Holroyd (H 59) in the only Haileybury team to win this competition.
He was a Founder Member of the Elders and captain in 2016. During his captaincy, he also generously provided the Founders’ Putter which is now played for in a singles stableford competition in the morning of the Spring Meeting at The Berkshire. In short, he was a wonderful golfer, a generous man and great company.
From Cambridge to medical products
Educated at Haileybury and Jesus College, Cambridge he finally retired in 2008 from a long and successful business career in the medical products industry where he held many senior directorship roles in companies like Vickers and Summit. At the same time he was very enthusiastic about his involvement with the Princes Trust and took a keen interest in encouraging young talent to achieve their full potential.
Awarded an OBE
He was awarded the OBE in 1997. The official citation reads James Edmund Everitt. Chairman, Centre for Applied Microbiology and Research, Porton Down. For services to Health Care.
As for his ‘domestic’ golf, his home club was West Sussex which he joined in 1984, where he was elected captain in 2001 and Chairman from 2011 to 2015. He was a member of the Royal and Ancient as well as being one of the 3 Founders of the Elders who were also members of the seniors (the other two were Stephen Proctor and Richard Gracey).
RIP Jim Everitt
The funeral will take place on Wednesday 23rd February at 2pm at Worthing Crematorium. All our welcome.
Our condolences to John, his brother Simon (B 74), sister Louise and stepmother Nicola.
