It was both humbling and inspiring to hear from OH Daniel Farnfield (K 97) recently, as he shared news of his diagnosis of liver and bowel cancer.
Dan, who is currently undergoing treatment, spoke candidly about the challenges he has faced over recent months, whilst maintaining a remarkably positive outlook. Writing during his treatment, he reflected:
“I can’t reverse time and not be diagnosed and so I just have to focus on beating it and getting back to normal life again.”
In a recent message to colleagues and friends, Dan described the physical and emotional impact of treatment, acknowledging the difficulties of adapting to life away from work and coping with the fatigue that accompanies his recovery. Despite these challenges, he remains determined and optimistic as he continues his fight against cancer.
Since 2023, Dan has been a Teacher of Geography and Houseparent at Bromsgrove School, having previously spent a decade in the same role at Christ’s Hospital in West Sussex. Throughout his career, he has dedicated himself to supporting and guiding young people, and it is clear that the care and encouragement he has shown others has been returned in abundance. Dan spoke warmly of the support he has received from colleagues and pupils alike, describing their kindness as a source of strength and comfort during this difficult period.
His words serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of community, friendship and maintaining a positive mindset in the face of adversity. The entire Haileybury community will join us in wishing Dan every success with his treatment and a full recovery. We look forward to hearing of his continued progress and, in time, his return to the profession he clearly loves.
