Recently, we were contacted by Abdul Mouiz, who, while visiting a historic cemetery in the remote Mand region of Balochistan, Pakistan, discovered the grave of Old Haileyburian Thomas Onslow Hughes (USC 1893–1897).
Thomas was killed on 16 April 1916 while serving as Assistant Political Agent in Makran. More than 110 years later, Abdul took the time to photograph Thomas’s grave and memorial, before kindly offering the images to The Haileybury Society so they can be preserved in our archives.

In his email, Abdul reflected:
“Who were they? 110 years ago, they may have shared the same dreams as ours.”
His thoughtful gesture is a powerful reminder that remembrance can transcend time, distance and nationality.

We are incredibly grateful to Abdul for his kindness and generosity in helping to preserve this small but important piece of Haileybury’s history.
