OH in the Spotlight: Ruth Maclean (Alb 98) – Reporting on the World Stage

From the classrooms of Haileybury to reporting on some of the world’s most significant events, OH Ruth Maclean (Alb 98) has built an impressive career in international journalism.

As one of the early generations of girls to attend Haileybury following the introduction of full coeducation, Ruth is part of an important chapter in the school’s history. Today, she is making her mark on the international stage as West Africa Bureau Chief for The New York Times, one of the world’s most recognised newspapers.

Based in Dakar, Senegal, Ruth reports on political developments, conflict, humanitarian crises and the lives of communities across West and Central Africa. Her work takes her to the heart of complex and often challenging situations, bringing important stories to an international audience.

A Career Across Continents

Following her time at Haileybury, Ruth studied History and Philosophy at the University of York before completing a postgraduate qualification in Broadcast Journalism at City University, London.

Her journalism career has taken her across several continents, with previous roles at The Times in London and The Guardian. Reporting from Mexico, South Africa and West Africa, she has covered major international events, including the death of Nelson Mandela, the Oscar Pistorius trial, political unrest and the impact of extremist violence.

Between 2016 and 2019, Ruth served as The Guardian’s West Africa correspondent, producing extensive reporting on politics, human rights, conflict and the experiences of people living through extraordinary circumstances. In December 2019, she joined The New York Times as its West Africa correspondent, subsequently becoming Bureau Chief.

Giving a Voice to Important Stories

Throughout her career, Ruth has demonstrated a particular commitment to telling stories that might otherwise go unheard. Her reporting has explored issues ranging from political instability and human rights to the experiences of women and families affected by violence and displacement.

In a 2024 interview with Howard University, Ruth spoke about the importance of following subjects that genuinely interest a journalist, asking thoughtful questions and accurately representing the people whose stories are being told. It is an approach that reflects the responsibility and sensitivity required of international correspondents, particularly when reporting from communities facing difficult circumstances.

An OH Making Her Mark

Ruth’s achievements are another wonderful example of the varied and remarkable paths taken by members of the Haileybury community. From being among the early generations of girls at Haileybury to holding a senior reporting position at a globally respected newspaper, her journey is one that deserves recognition.

The Haileybury Society is delighted to highlight Ruth’s achievements and looks forward to following her continued work in international journalism.
