The Haileybury Society is saddened to learn of the death of Dr John Barry Cook (Staff 1965-72) who has died on on 1st March 2023, aged 82.
Educated at King’s College and Guy’s Hospital Medical School, John joined Haileybury under William Stewart in 1965 and served the college as both Senior Science Master and Head of Physics.
After Haileybury, in 1973 he moved to Christ College, Brecon, where he was Headmaster, before joining Epsom College nine years later, where he served until his retirement from the school in 1992. He is remembered at Epsom for helping shape the school during a period of great political and economic uncertainty; he left it with a full complement of staff and pupils, higher academic standards and with a much broader range of subjects available to its pupils.
After Epsom, he worked as Director of the Inner Cities Young People’s Project for three years until being appointed as Principal at Cumberland Lodge, Windsor Great Park in 1995. In his later years he worked as an educational consultant.
The Haileybury Society sends its deepest condolences to his wife Vivien, their three children and to their grandchildren at this very difficult time.
