Bursaries and Scholarships

In accordance with its charitable objectives, and to meet the needs of those with specific hardship requirements, The Haileybury Society provides a limited number of bursaries and scholarships to pupils at Haileybury from ten subsidiary Charity funds registered with the Charity Commission.

Fee remission offers are usually between 10% and 30% for 5 years (from Removes) or 2 years (from L VI form) and there is a robust application process in place, which includes a means test, to include supporting documentary evidence from both parents and/or guardians, and sight of the pupil’s most recent school report.

Applying for a bursary

All applications are treated as highly confidential by the Society’s trustees, all of whom are OHs.

Applications for the academic year starting in September should be received at the Society office or by email no later than 1st February.

Parents/Guardians of those pupils in receipt of Bursaries are respectfully requested to keep in touch with the Society on an annual basis and provide a copy of the most recent school report wherever possible.

Change of circumstances

If your personal or financial circumstances, or those of your child change whilst in receipt of a Society bursary please contact us immediately as your entitlement to a specific fund may be affected.

Restricted funds

Eight of these funds are restricted by virtue of their specific objects as advised by their benefactors, all of whom were either OHs or former Haileybury staff. These are as follows –

  • R A Hall Bequest (310014-1) To provide bursaries to pupils at Haileybury who are sons or daughters of former pupils. Awarded by Major Rowland Arthur Hall (Le Bas 1913) who was invalided from the RNAS in 1917 and served again in WW2 in the Intelligence Corps Major in India and the Middle East and with the Central Mediterranean Force. He retired from Hambros Bank in 1959 and died in 1981, aged 82
  • Roy Dore Bequest (310014-2) To provide scholarships to genuine all-rounders. Awarded by Roy Holdsworth Dore (Ha 1904) went on to Pembroke College Oxford and became a Solicitor. He was a Second Lieutenant in the 9th Battalion Welch Regiment and was invalided in 1914. He died in 1941, aged 53. He and his twin brother Russell were significant benefactors to Haileybury
  • W E Russell Fund (31004-3) To provide a scholarship to a pupil, preferably to the sons or daughters of schoolmasters and officers who have held regular commissions in Her Majesty’s Forces. Awarded in memory of William Ernest Russell (C 1984) one of Haileybury’s earliest pupils, who died in 1903, aged 51
  • Matthews/Thomas Drama award (310014-4) To assist younger members of the Society to further their study and development in any aspect of drama. Awarded by Jack Thomas (staff  1954-1988) and Imogen Thomas (nee Matthews)
  • Colin Cobb Scholarship Fund (31004-6) To fund a scholarship to a pupil or pupils who might not be able to be educated at Haileybury without some financial reward. Awarded by Colin Cobb, who taught at Haileybury from 1940-1984 and was HM of Colvin, Second Master and the school’s first Registrar. He died in 2003.
  • A S Russell Bursary Fund (310014-8) To provide a scholarship or bursary which will help to enable a talented pupil or pupils to enter Haileybury or to continue at Haileybury. Awarded in memory of Alexander Sherwood Russell ( L 1985)
  • The G R Ridsdill Smith Bursary Fund (310014-9) To back up existing funds that encourage and enable pupils to come to or remain at Haileybury, who otherwise would not be able to do so.  Awarded by Geoffrey Ridsdill Smith who taught at Haileybury from 1927-1958. A graduate of Queens College Cambridge who served with the Hertfordshire Regiment in WW2 and died in 1992
  • The Fawcett Family Prize Fund (31004-10) to finance prize awards to pupils in the Lower School. Awarded by Brian Fawcett (Ha 52).

Unrestricted funds

The J S Whatton Will Trust (310014-7) and the Norman King Bequest (310014-5) are two Funds which are treated as unrestricted and can be used for charitable purposes at the Society trustees’ discretion for the advancement of educational purposes. John Swift Whatton (Hi 1875)was one of Haileybury’s earliest pupils. He went on to Trinity College Cambridge and was called to the bar. He died in 1932, aged 71. Colonel Norman King TD (Tr 1885) was Honorary Secretary of The Old Haileyburian Society 1929-47 and President 1947-48
