The Haileybury Society was delighted to attend the Probus Ladies Lunch Club meeting at The Galley Hall yesterday, alongside Society Trustee Alison Baker (Staff, 2002–22; HM Hailey, 2012–22), who had been invited to be the club’s guest speaker for June.
Probus clubs bring together retired and semi-retired people who enjoy friendship, fellowship, and the opportunity to hear from a wide variety of guest speakers. Founded in the UK during the 1960s, the Probus movement was established to help retired people maintain social connections, continue learning, and remain actively engaged after leaving full-time employment. Originally supported by local Rotary clubs, it has since grown into an international network of clubs whose members share a desire for companionship, stimulating conversation, and lifelong learning. Through regular meetings, lunches, and social activities, members remain connected to their local communities while sharing experiences and interests with like-minded people.
We were given a warm welcome by Club President Kay Braithwaite and Secretary Diane Warman, who made us feel at home from the moment we arrived. The afternoon was filled with lively conversation, laughter, and a genuine sense of community spirit.
Alison captivated members with her fascinating insight into life as HM of Hailey House. Drawing on her ten years in the role, she shared stories that helped bring to life the realities of caring for, supporting, and guiding more than 60 girls under one roof.

From the everyday challenges and responsibilities to the memorable moments that make boarding life so special, Alison painted a vivid picture of the unique role HM’s play within the Haileybury community. Her anecdotes highlighted not only the practical complexities of running a busy boarding house but also the deep relationships formed with pupils and the lasting impact those experiences can have on young people’s lives.
The ladies were thoroughly engaged, with many questions and conversations continuing long after the formal presentation had ended. It was a wonderful opportunity to share a little of Haileybury’s story and provide an insight into an aspect of school life that many people rarely get to see.
To conclude the afternoon, Diane kindly presented The Haileybury Society with a cheque for £50 in support of our charitable work. We are extremely grateful for this generous donation and for the warm hospitality shown to us throughout the lunch.

Our sincere thanks go to everyone at the Probus Ladies Lunch Club for their invitation and kindness. It was a pleasure to spend the afternoon with such a welcoming group, and we hope to return again in the future.
The Probus Ladies Lunch Club meets on the third Monday of every month and is currently welcoming new members. If you are interested in joining a friendly group that enjoys good company, engaging speakers, and regular social activities, they would be delighted to hear from you.
