Tim Woodward (C 67) – actor in Wings and A Piece of Cake

Tim Woodward

The Haileybury Society is saddened to learn of the death of Timothy (Tim) Oliver Woodward (C 67) who has died on 9th November 2023, aged 70.

Tim, son of actor Edward Woodward, joined RADA after Haileybury and made his first film appearance in Galileo in 1975.

Taking to the air

It was shortly after this that he appeared in the BBC TV series Wings, about the early days of the RFC on the Western Front in France.

Playing 2nd Lt. Alan Farmer, his role expressed the class conflict so redolent in British society at that time as he, a blacksmith’s son, was shown in contrast to other more ‘elite’ types.

Wings was aired in two series between 1978-79. In the second series his character was shown as having been shot in the leg; in fact, Tim had damaged his leg in real life following a motor cycle accident in Ireland!

A decade later, in A Piece of Cake, Woodward again played the role of a pilot; this time the class-war re-emerged in the setting of a fighter pilot squadron during the ‘phoney war’ of 1939-40.

A rewarding acting career

Tim’s acting career embraced both film and television. As well as Wings and A Piece of Cake, he appeared in various roles in series such as Casualty; Heartbeat; Nuremburg: Nazis on Trial; New Tricks and Peaky Blinders.

His film credits include The House of Angelo; Personal Services; Pierrepoint – the Last Hangman and Radioactive. Younger audiences will also remember Tim as the narrator in the audio-book production of Wide-Eye.

The Haileybury Society sends its deepest condolences to Tim’s family and friends at this difficult time.
