The Haileybury Society is saddened to learn of the death of Michael Raymond King (L 53) on 16th December 2022, aged 83.
Michael’s twin brother, Paul (L 53), has written to us to tell us Michael died peacefully in hospital at Penticton, British Columbia. As he says, “this is quite a wrench as Michael was my closest friend for my 83 years”.
At Haileybury, Michael represented the college at Athletics in 1957 and later studied law, becoming a solicitor in 1965 and practised in the City of London for over 40 years before his retirement. He played a prominent part in the Tallow Chandlers Livery Company, one of the ancient livery companies of the City, serving on its Court.
Since retiring, Michael who had lived in Vancouver with his Canadian wife Elizabeth, who predeceased him two years ago. His two children continue to live in Canada. It was only in March this year that he was in contact with The Haileybury Society to tell us of his two nieces visiting from the UK – Annabel Agace (L & Alb 83) and Polly Burns (K & Alb 86).
As Michael wrote at the time, “they brought a great present of some special OH socks! We have spent much time reminiscing about school and talking about famous OH’s. On International Women’s Day we remarked that there was not such awareness of famous or successful OH women. Perhaps this could be something you could explore in a future edition of the newsletter? I greatly enjoy the newsletter when it pops into my inbox and so please keep up the good work. Here I am with my nieces. All the best Michael King”
