Nigel Copeman (E 58) – oil industry executive who later qualified as a pilot

Nigel Copeman (E 58)

The Haileybury Society is saddened to learn of the death of Nigel Charles Kevin Garry Copeman (E 58), who has died on 23rd September 2020, aged 75.

Nigel was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in January this year and we have been sent a brief obituary by his wife, Patricia, to whom the Society sends it deepest condolences. As Patricia writes,

Of his time at Haileybury I know that he was an enthusiastic rugby player and he captained the XV in his last term. He was also a member of the Elysium. I believe he also was in charge of the RAF section when Her Majesty the Queen visited Haileybury.

He graduated from Bristol University in 1966; we met at university and we were married in 1967.  In 1969, after a spell on the family farm in Oxfordshire, he joined Shell International Chemical Company.  He was soon appointed to their overseas division and he held posts in Mexico, Costa Rica and Japan. Our daughter was born in Mexico and our son, Clive, himself an OH, was born in Costa Rica.

Upon leaving SICC my husband took up a post as CEO with a Swiss shipping company in Peru. We then returned to his home county of Norfolk, where we farmed for several years. In his retirement he played golf, was warden of the local wildlife reserve, and also qualified as a private pilot, flying our Cessna 172 whenever the weather allowed both around England and to the continent.

He has been laid to rest in the family churchyard in Norfolk.
