It was great to hear from Sue Snowball (H & Alb 80) recently about her long and varied career in a very male dominated industry.
After Haileybury Sue read Anthropology and Geography at Manchester University and then undertook a PGCE, followed by a PhD in 2006. She then taught at Coleg Gwent in Wales as a lecturer for many years before joining the MoD.
Sue worked at the MoD in Defence Equipment & Support as Head of Entry Talent until 2024. She became the first ‘Specialist Fellow in Defence ‘ in HR in 2021. This is a considerable accolade as there are only 50 awarded each year with a rigorous application process for deep subject specialists, and up until then everyone has been an engineer, being deep subject specialists in very niche and specific defence equipment, including satellites, jets, ships, cyber, space, laser, warfare and weapons.
Throughout her career Sue has been the pioneer who championed women and particularly non-engineering women in what is a very male dominated industry. She was recognised in Westminster for her experience, knowledge, skill and qualifications in Learning and Development and HR more generally.
She now runs her own consultancy.
