On 15th November 60 OHs from the 80s & 90s & guests came together at the prestigious Queen’s Club in west London for a black-tie dinner, courtesy of Queen’s trustee Deane Pennick (B 77).
Over a fizz welcome reception in the Members’ Bar we were able to watch some Real Tennis from the viewing gallery. Dinner was served in the Club’s beautifully appointed President’s Room, where guests enjoyed a menu of smoked salmon, breast of chicken and Hailey-berry tart.
The Haileybury Grace was said by Robin Bishop (Former Staff). After dessert the Society President Lizzie Graham (K 76 & Alb) welcomed everyone warmly and introduced our Guest Speaker, William Flint Cahan (Honorary Member). She said that William has taught French and English at Haileybury for 45 years, including as managing Speech Day, as a House tutor in Allenby, Batten and Melvill and now Kipling for over 20 years. He has been in the CCF, ran the 3rd XI cricket for nearly 2 decades, was Editor of the Haileyburian, ran the VI form centre (quite badly apparently …), has run different extra-curricular activities from cookery to bridge and is a stalwart of Pastimes. She mentioned his ongoing war against wasps (la guerre des guepes) which is well-known to anyone he has ever taught.
William spoke eloquently of his 45-year teaching career, describing the many changes which have taken place at the school during these years and of the importance of his wife Suse and family. He spoke of the importance of the OH community to the school and reminded several OHs present that they still owed him some Prep!
Roger Woodburn (Former Staff) introduced his Haileybury Quiz. The prize was the last bottle of our 2023 bespoke 50% strength Winged Heart Gin which was won by Anne Taylor (Aby & H 84), Emma Brining (Alb & K 84) & Gwyneth Lee (Aby & H 84).
