10th September 2024
We were delighted to welcome 90 OHs who left Haileybury during the last decade to a very special evening reception at the Oriental club on 10th September.
The Society’s work
The main purpose of the evening was to introduce this cohort of young OHs to the Society’s work. Alison Baker (Former Staff & HM Hailey), a well-known face to everyone who attended spoke animatedly to those present telling them about the Society’s travel & drama grants for young OHs, about how the Society can promote their own charitable interests and about our Online Business Directory. She explained how we support each other in many ways including careers advice and with overseas representatives. Alison spoke about the grants given to the school over many years including the new Grubber, bursaries, archives, chapel memorials, library, sports boards and grants to houses. She underlined the wide reach of the OH community and how the spirit of service underpins everything we do.
The OH Sports Clubs
Representatives of the OH Sports Clubs were present in force during the evening to engage directly with the young OHs present. All these teams represent the Haileybury name at national level in alumni competitions and for them to be able to encourage new members is a vital part of their activity. The OH rugby club (OHRFC), the OH golf society (OHGS), the OH rackets society (OHRS), the ladies hockey & ladies lacrosse were represented and have reported how delighted they are to have been able to make new connections. We can also put OHs in touch with the Haileybury Hermits (cricket), the Veterans Rifles Club and OH netball/football organisers.
The OH & ISC Masonic Lodge
Alison spoke warmly of the OH Masons and the invaluable work they do as part of the vast global Masonic network and to support Haileybury with financial donations such as a recent grant to lacrosse kits. Representatives from the OH Masons were pleased to attend and to reach out to young OHs.
The Oriental Club
Young OHs may apply to join the OC at a heavily reduced membership fee for 7 years. Dr Toby Parker, Haileybury Director of Heritage, attended the event as our guest in order to advise young OHs present of this process.
If you would like further information on joining any of the OH Spirts clubs or the OH Masonic Lodge please email members@thehaileyburysociety.org and we’ll connect you.
Keeping in touch
We so enjoyed our very special evening amongst our youngest Society members and look forward to keeping in touch with you all – and your OH friends who may not yet know about us, so do please spread the word!
