Donald Hurndall Smith (Former staff 1957-93, HM Edmonstone, Head of Classics)

We share the sad news that Donald passed away peacefully at home on the morning of 21st June 2024, surrounded by family.
The funeral was held in St Andrew’s Church, Sedburgh on 1st July 2024′

Born in Huddersfield in 1933, Donald Smith was educated at Sedburgh School in Cumbria. He went on to achieve a Double First in Classics at University College, Oxford. He spent his National Service as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Navy.

Donald joined Haileybury in 1957 and spent his entire working career at the school. He served as Head of Classics, HM of Edmonstone (68-73), Head of Careers, Master i/c Golf, served with the CCF and ran the Antiquarian Society.

Donald had a long and happy marriage to Shirley with whom he had four children, Matthew, Jonathan, Rachel and Nicholas, all Haileyburians. The family shared Donald’s love of music and hill walking.

During retirement in his beloved Sedburgh, Donald and Shirley were very involved with the local community, establishing the Pepperpot Club for musicians.
