D – DAY 80 YEARS ON

As the world commemorates the 80th anniversary of D-Day the Society pays tribute to all its members who saw active service during WW2, in particular those who were involved in Operation Overlord on 6th June 1944.

Around 500 OHs, including 180 OISCs and 5 OUSCs, lost their lives between 1939-45; several of these deaths occurred during and in the immediate aftermath of the landings on the Normandy beaches on 6th June 1944.

This included Air Chief Marshall Sir T L Leigh-Mallory, KCB, DSO (M 1906) who was the Commander-in-Chief of the Allied Expeditionary Air Force for the Normandy Invasion. Aged 52, Sir Trafford was killed in an air crash in the French Alps in August 1944.

Lt. Rex Whistler (Highfield 1919), the acclaimed artist, was at the D-Day landings with the Welsh Guards and was killed by a mortar bomb two months later near Caen.
