The Haileybury Society is delighted to learn that that Dr Adrian Sheen (E 65) has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Australia Day Honours for services to medicine.
The OAM recognises Australian citizens and other persons for outstanding achievement and service. In this vein, Adrian views his GP work as a calling, having served over 40 years as a doctor and practice owner in Mulgoa in New South Wales.
A ‘Womb to Tomb’ calling
Although he jokingly refers to GP work as a “womb to tomb” calling, there is no doubting his dedication to his profession, believing that serving a community for so long should not be seen as unusual.
As well as his role as GP and practice owner, Adrian is committed to service beyond his immediate comminity. He served VP of the NSW branch of the AMA from 1997-99 also finds time to lecture at Sydney University.
He also founded Fiji’s Vatu Health Charity and co-chairs the disability charity Freedom Across Australia. Despite all this, Adrian also finds time for his musical passions, playing in and leading the Mulgoa Road Jazz Band.
Grateful to Haileybury
As Adrian says, ‘I have always been appreciative of my time and education at Haileybury. I was so fortunate to get into medical school and then be able to spend my life as a family doctor’
It’s wonderful to see the Haileybury Spirit of Service is still shining brightly wherever it exists around the world!
