The Haileybury Society is saddened to learn of the death of Michael Richard Parrish, RD, JP (Ha 51) who has died on 27th September 2023, aged 85.
Michael was a lifelong enthusiast for the school, having been both Head of House and College Prefect; he was also an active member of the Society.
After Haileybury he completed his National Service with the Royal Navy and then joined the Royal Naval Reserves, which he served for many years, ultimately becoming a Lieutenant Commander (RNR) at HMS Sussex.
Successful businessman
He worked in the family business, Wightman and Parrish Ltd, of which he became both Managing Director and then Chairman. He oversaw its development from retail and wholesale hardware and ironmongery to a significant distributor of cleaning materials and healthcare resources, and the move from its base in Lewes High Street to new premises in Hailsham. In this capacity he has been succeeded by his son Nicholas (Ha 78).
Community servant
Michael made a wide-ranging contribution to the local community in and around Lewes, as Chair of the Lewes Boys’ Club, as a magistrate for 25 years, and latterly as Churchwarden of Iford.
His education at Haileybury was an important part of a life dedicated to Christian service and leadership of others.
Michael married Pam Hillman on 15th July 1961. They were married for over 62 years and had three children, Richard (Ha 75), Nicholas (Ha 78) and Juliet. Michael also had two grandchildren, Imogen and Jamie.
