The Haileybury Society is saddened to learn of the death of Lieutenant General Sir Richard Maurice Hilton Vickers KCB, LVO, OBE (K 42), who has died on 6th February 2024 aged 95.

Head of School

A member of Kipling House, Richard was Head of School (1947), played in the Cricket XI (1945-6), the Rugby XV in 1946 and was Captain of the school Squash team, also in 1946.

Long military career

Richard enjoyed a distinguished military career. Awarded Sword of Honour and the King’s Medal in 1948, he served in Korea and later became Equerry to HM The Queen (1956-9).

After service in Borneo in 1964, Richard served as CO of the Royal Dragoons (1968) and the Blues and Royals (1969). Awarded the OBE, he became Commander of the II Armoured Brigade (1972), GOC of the 4th Armoured Division (1978) and Comdt of the RMAS in 1979. In 1982, Richard was appointed General Director of General Army Training.

Dedication to service

In his other work, Richard served as Director General of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust (1983-93), a Lieutenant of the Victorian Order and was Gentleman Usher to HM Queen in 1986.

Richard was also well known to many in the OH community. As well as serving as a Life Governor of Haileybury Counil between 1982 and 1994, he was President of The Haileybury Society from 1984-5.

Richard’s dedication to Haileybury and military service is unsurprising given his background. His father was Lieutenant General W G H Vickers (USC 1902) and his brother Major P J H Vickers (ISC (D & F) & K 38).

The Haileybury Society sends its deepest condolences to Sir Richard’s family at this difficult time.
