The Haileybury Society is saddened to learn of the death of Lieutenant Colonel Denys Anderson Hooper (ISC [A] 37), who died peacefully of old age on 23rd October 2021, aged 100.
Denys’s son Toby has recently been in touch with The Society on the anniversary of his death and has generously donate £500 to our funds in memory of Denys and his older brother Lieutenant Colonel Brian Arthur William Hooper MBE (ISC [A] 30) who was killed in action in 1945, aged 28 (and who is remembered on our Roll of Honour).
Both brothers served in the 4th Battalion of the 10th Baluch Regiment, Indian Army. After the War Denys was commissioned into the Royal Fusiliers in England with whom he served until 1971. He then worked as a Director of Administration for Touche Ross & Co, Chartered Accountants until he retired in 1986, conducting special projects for the firm until 1990.
As Toby says, “Denys loved his time at the ISC and remembered it always with affection and loyalty. He rowed and played rugby. I believe that he and my late mother attended a reunion at Haileybury, perhaps in the 1990s.
Denys’s older brother preceded him at the ISC by about four years and was killed in action in Italy on 28 January 1945, aged 28. Brian is buried in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery at Forli (right).”
Kind donation
It was Denys’s wish to make a donation in memory of his brother Brian; Toby was keen to make the gift on the anniversary of Denys’s death.
The Haileybury Society is very pleased to accept Tony’s donation of £500 on Denys’s behalf and is also delighted that he has made a Gift Aid declaration too, further enhancing his donation.
Photographs
Our photographs show Denys reading his telegram from the Queen on his hundredth birthday (23rd May 2021) and Brian’s headstone at Forli; both were taken by Toby.
