The Haileybury Society is saddened to learn of the death of Hugh James Freeland (L 89) who has died of bone cancer on 10th April 2022 aged 45.
Hugh was a big part of the Haileybury family who also played rugby for the OHRFC for a number of years and had recently set up a clothing range, Hughie’s Kit, to help raise funds for Bone Cancer Research, the charity that helped him and his family through his treatment.
A friend remembers Hugh
His good friend Jon Swannell (LS & L 87) has written, “Hugh died on the evening of Sunday 10th April after a two year fight against bone cancer (osteosarcoma). Despite multiple operations and rounds of chemotherapy it became clear early in 2022 that it had spread to his lungs and spine and there was nothing more the doctors could do.
He spent the final few weeks in Winchester Hospice where he was cared for brilliantly and was surrounded by family and friends. I visited him several times and although in clear discomfort he was generally his usual chipper self. He leaves behind his wife, Rosie, and two small boys, Rory and Rafferty.
Hughie’s Kit
A new fashion business, Hughie’s Kit, has been established in Hugh’s memory, a proportion of profits from which will be donated to research into osteosarcoma. As Jon says, the site will hopefully provide a legacy for Hugh’s family as well as raising money and awareness for Bone Cancer Research.”
The Haileybury Society sends its deepest condolences to Hugh’s wife Rosie and their two sons at this most difficult time.
