The Haileybury Society is saddened to learn of the death of Thomas Oswald Mayhew (H 49) who has died 22nd January 2022, aged 86.

Thomas was initially educated at the Upton House School (where he was later to be a governor) before moving on to Haileybury. Here, he represented the School in swimming and  was also  a member of Haileybury’s Rowing 2nd IV in 1953. His love of rowing was to continue at the Eton Excelsior Rowing Club; he was also an active member of Windsor Squash Club.

Following National Service, in which he served as part of the Royal Army Pay Corps, he studied to be an accountant, becoming an ACA in 1960 and FCA in 1971 and rising to be a partner in one of London’s “Big 6” accountancy firms. It was whilst he was there that he was invited to become a Liveryman in the Worshipful Company of Plumbers and a Freeman of the City of London.

Thomas had a particular love for cars and, owning a Ferrari, was a member of the Ferrari Owners Club. He travelled to many Grand Prix circuits to watch the racing yet, despite his love of speed, his preferred choice for day-to-day work was a humble Citroen 2cv. An old friend from Haileybury, Jeremy Lenox (H 49), often accompanied him on race days; we are grateful to Jeremy for informing us of the loss of his dear friend.

The Haileybury Society sends its deepest condolences to Thomas’s family at this difficult time.
