The Haileybury Society each year awards grants to The Haileybury Youth Trust.
HYT began life in 1890 in the East End of London, working with the poor of Stepney. British prime minister and former Haileybury pupil Clement Attlee was once the Trust’s manager. After a century of working in the East End, HYT relocated to Uganda in 2006.
Today, HYT is East Africa’s leading advocate of a sustainable approach to building and vocational training.
The Haileybury Society and HYT – a supportive relationship
The Haileybury Society supports HYT’s Assistant Country Manager in Uganda – a graduate OH – with a generous contribution towards subsistence and travel costs. HYT also welcomes former Haileybury pupils as volunteers as part of their gap year.
This steady flow of dedicated young OHs to Uganda, working alongside the excellent permanent HYT team, is testament to the commitment of Haileyburians’ spirit of service, in an appropriate, contemporary way.
Sustainable buildings
Awarded the prestigious Ashden International Award for Sustainable Buildings, HYT works with international NGOs, government agencies and other partners, successfully completing environmentally-friendly projects and training programmes all over Uganda. Watch the video to learn more.
Working with refugees
Uganda has more refugees than anywhere else in Africa. HYT works with refugees in settlements throughout Uganda, giving women and men skills in construction and job opportunities.
Refugees build as they train, improving settlements with climate-friendly meeting centres, trading kiosks, schools and water tanks.
After their training, refugees have returned to their home countries to work as masons. Others have built new homes in the settlements, or stayed with HYT to work on other projects.
