1914-18 War

Nearly 50 OHs from Edmonstone died during the Great War. The roll includes 3 MCs and 4 DSOs.

One of the casualties was Charles Grindling (E 1910). Charles was a lieutenant in the Chatham Battalion Royal Naval Division, Royal Marines. 

During the Gallipoli landings, his company commander was killed so he took charge of the company’s advance up the slopes where he too was killed on 3rd May 1915, aged 19.

1939-45 War

Over 20 OHs from Edmonstone died in the service of their country during WW2.

One of the Roll is Flying Officer John Jannings (E 36). Flying from Holme-on-Spalding Moor on the night of 28th June 1944, his Handley-Page Halifax bomber was shot down by a night-fighter and crashed at Lesges (Aisne) in France, where he and his fellow crewmen are all buried.
