Peter Rye (A 65) has been in contact with the Haileybury Society following a recent visit to the church of Holy Trinity, Loddon in Norfolk. Walking inside he came across a most beautiful memorial to two brothers who died in WW1 within 5 months of each other; to his surprise they were both Old Haileyburians. The full memorial is shown below.
The memorial features Francis Edward Cadge (M 1907) and William Cadge (M 1903).
William, a Captain in the Norfolk Regiment, lived for a period in Ceylon (modern day Sri Lanka) before returning to Britain to join up in 1914. He was killed in action at Loos in April 1915.
Francis was a Lieutenant in the Essex Regiment, who also served abroad in India and Mauritius before returning to Britain in December 1914. He was killed in action at Gallipoli in September 1915.
The monument clearly shows the love felt for the two brothers by their family and the deep sorrow at their loss just a few months apart from each other.
