£500 Travel Grant Awarded for Clinical Placement in Peru – Emily Jacobs (M13)

We are pleased to share the news of our second 2026 Travel Grant to one of our young members, supporting an exceptional opportunity to gain international clinical experience in Peru in August 2026.

As part of Emily’s medical degree, she hopes to take part in an IFMSA Exchange, undertaking a month-long clinical placement in a Peruvian hospital. While the specific city and department are still to be confirmed, Emily is aiming to be placed within Infectious Diseases, an area of long-standing academic and personal interest.

In her own words:

“Peru offers an exceptional opportunity to gain experience with tropical infectious diseases, and I am particularly eager to practise diagnostic reasoning and patient management in a setting where resource constraints demand both clinical creativity and flexibility.”

Emily went on to highlight how the placement aligns closely with her academic interests and leadership experience:

“Having served as President of the Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine Society at the University of Edinburgh when completing my BSc in Medical Sciences, this placement would be a rare and formative opportunity to gain hands-on experience, clarify my interests for later-year rotations, and help inform my choice of specialty.”

Preparation and language skills are a key part of the planned experience. As Emily wrote:

“I would not have been able to take on the challenge of working clinically in Spanish without the support of the Haileybury Travel Grant I received in 2018, which enabled my trip to Ecuador during my gap year and strengthened both my language skills and interest in healthcare in Latin America.”

“During the placement, I will be primarily based at the allocated hospital, though I hope to plan a few solo weekend trips to explore the country and make the most of travelling so far. Receiving a travel grant would allow me to fully engage with this rare opportunity, providing the flexibility to explore Peru and cover essential items, such as surgical scrubs, which I will need to supply myself.”

At The Haileybury Society, we are proud to support this opportunity and to continue enabling young members to gain life-changing international experience through our Travel Grant programme.
