It was a real treat to see those within our community who attended the second Foundation Day at Haileybury on Sunday 7th September as a joint event with the school. Thankfully the much-expected rain held off and everyone enjoyed a wonderful day in the sunshine.
Chapel Service
A beautiful service in Chapel led by the new school chaplain Father Matt Austen, whose sermon about Haileybury’s winged hearts was very apt and thought-provoking. The Chapel was filled with glorious music from the Director of Music Richard Brain, and the Chapel choir, joined by four OH voices, sang the anthems and led the singing of four beautiful hymns, including the School hymn ‘Lift up Your Hearts’ and ‘Jerusalem’, in time-honoured school tradition. In the 80th year of OH Clement Attlee’s (L 1896) appointment as Prime Minister, there was a retiring collection for The Attlee Foundation and The Attlee Youth and Community Centre.

House Tours & School Buildings
Seeing their old House is an important part of any OH’s return visits to Haileybury, and to be shown around on a pupil-led tour is an added bonus, giving the chance for interaction across the generations. Other school buildings were open for guests to visit in their own time.

Library Reveal
We are grateful to Dr Sam Koon, Director of Teaching and Learning, Head of Classics, for welcoming guests into the Library, which has been renovated over the summer holidays. This beautiful space is now even more welcoming, with all the original windows and shelving refurbished by the school’s workforce, together with new computer terminals and increased desk space. Sam gave a fascinating presentation on the Library project, together with displaying some archive material relating to Clement Attlee (L 1896).

Past & Present Sports Matches
OH teams competed again the school’s first teams in Cricket, Football, Hockey (girls and boys), Lacrosse and Netball. The school’s teams triumphed in everything except for Football, in which the OHs won the Lyttleton Cup on penalties. In addition the OH Rackets Society played the Richard Palmer Memorial competition.

Speeches
After a delicious buffet luncheon served on Pavilion, the Master Eugene du Toit, the Society’s President Fiona Illingworth (BF 76 & Alb) and the Chairman of Governors Martin Rayfield, spoke of the wonderful Haileybury community coming together for this event, and of the rebuilding of the relationship between the school and the Society.
