I received the Haileybury newsletter, and it stirred up so many wonderful memories of my time there (Trevelyan – 1972 – 1977).
It also stirred up memories of my whole family at the school, my brothers Mark (Tr. 1970 – 1975) and Charles (Tr. 1968 – 1973) and my sister Patricia (1978 – 1980) as well as my mother Dorothy who perhaps my housemates might remember screaming loudly on the rugby touch line – “C’mon Trevelyan”! She passed away in 2022 after being a caring and much-loved GP in Hertford for many years.
I thought I would provide an update of the sad events my family has undergone over the last couple of decades as a quick “awareness nudge” regarding Motor Neuron Disease.
My father, Tony died of Motor Neuron Disease in 1961, (a disease not well understood at that time), Charles of the same in 2002 and Mark passed away also of the same disease recently in May of 2022. Familial MND accounts for only 5 – 10% of cases annually. Sadly, my sister Patricia also passed away in 2007 of a brain tumor.
Fortunately, they all lived very full lives, and we all had wonderful memories of Haileybury including those of our housemaster, the most influential man certainly in my past – Martin Marriott – an extraordinary example of leadership and compassion. My brothers leave a host of children (7) who sadly, now face the 50 / 50 specter of inheriting MND genealogy traits. Let us hope for treatment advances.
Anyway, if anyone felt like sharing a memory – please do – hugh@strongsidemarketing.com I’m in the States and would love to hear from you, or if you felt like donating to the MND work in the UK – you can do so at: Fundraise for the MND Association | #TakeOverMND in January 2024
Thanks for reading; hope all is well in your post Haileybury worlds. ?
