Michael Mosley (A 70)

We are very sad to learn of the death of OH Michael Mosley (A 70) in a tragic accident on the Greek island of Symi c. 5th June 2024, aged 67.

Michael was a well-known British TV journalist, producer and writer. He studied PPE at New College, Oxford and then trained as a doctor at the Royal Free Hospital, specialising in Psychiatry, joining the BBC in 1985.

He produced many programmes including The Human Face with Robert Winston, Inventions that Changed the World presented by Jeremy Clarkson, Blood and Guts, Medical Mavericks, The Story of Science and Things You Need to Know about Losing Weight,. He presented The Brain, Frontline Medicine including episodes called Survival and Rebuilding Lives, which focussed on improved treatment of military personnel injured in Afghanistan. His 2012 documentary The Truth about Exercise was an important report on the value of exercise to certain genetic types. His prolific documentaries on the BBC, Channel 4 & SBS (Australia) were informative, diverse and thought-provoking; he was an advocate of intermittent fasting and a low-carbohydrate diet, in particular the 5:2 diet as first shown in a BBC Horizon episode.

Michael Mosley was the writer of many books on diet and exercise, notably The Fast Diet (2013) and The Fast 800 Keto, his interest in these matters stemming from his own early diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes and Fast Asleep (2019) in which he revealed he was a lifelong insomniac..

He was named Medical Journalist of the Year in 1995 by the BMA and nominated for an Emmy in 2002 as Executive Producer of The Human Race with John Cleese.
